Those looking to send the winter blues packing in the best way possible need look no further than a stay along Spain's beautiful Costa Brava during the month of February. That's the official time when Carnival is celebrated, and the streets come alive with colorful parades that boast the most elaborate floats and costumes as well as plenty of live music, street dances, loads of special activities and events and an overall party atmosphere. Everyone is welcome to come join the festivities, and these are just a few of the area's most popular celebrations that you won't want to miss during your Costa Brava stay.

Platja d'Aro

Without a doubt, this is the part of the Costa Brava where you'll find the biggest Carnival celebrations. The party doesn't stop for at least 10 full days and nights, and you'll be treated to some 4,000 performers in elaborate costumes who parade through the streets dancing to the tune of several musical bands from Spain and throughout Europe. The street parties often get a little wild after dark, and you can count on the alcohol flowing and plenty of dancing to amazing live musical concerts.

Carnival in Roses usually goes on for no more than four days, but it's an intense time with a parade that brings together no less than 3,500 parade participants with some 80 troupes and up to 100 exceptional floats. Live musical concerts fill Roses with sound as a background to the many street dances and parties, and fair tents are set up with fun and excitement for every age group.

Things get really lively at the Carnival in Palamos with the highly anticipated Dance of Costumes where every troupe puts on a fabulous show for the audience. The parade features many elaborate floats and bands, and visitors should expect to enjoy street performers, live musical concerts, dances and plenty of fun activities and events for children and families.

Children and adults are invited to participate in the lively Farandole during the Carnival celebration in L'Escala. This old dance has everyone join hands and follow the brightly costumed leader through a maze of twists and turns, and it's a lot of fun for every age group. There are many family friendly activities and events available, and the parade is excellent.

Capmany and Vidreres

These two villages are most popular for providing the traditional Carnival dish that is known as Ranxo. Great pots of this delicious concoction are cooked to perfection, and you'll want more than one serving of this old recipe that includes beef, pork, sausage, beans, rice and potatoes. There are plenty of alcoholic beverages available to wash it down as well.
