Come Enjoy Barcelona’s Fabulous Festivals

Spain’s enchanting city of Barcelona is an incredible vacation destination that beckons millions of worldwide visitors each year. The fact that the city is steeped in a truly rich history and houses some of the world’s most popular historical and architectural treasures is one of its biggest draws, but that’s just the beginning of what Barcelona has to offer. Visitors also enjoy a world-famous nightlife scene, 5-star restaurants, wonderful water activities on the Mediterranean Sea and an endless supply of fascinating tours. Barcelona hosts a great many incredible festivals throughout the year as well, and these are just a few of the most popular.

Barcelona Carnival

Held each year from the end of February through the beginning of March, this week-long epic street party dates all the way back to the 16th century. Barcelona literally doesn’t sleep during the week’s festivities, and you’ll find family friendly events every day followed by special evening celebrations for the adults. While every restaurant and food market in town offers something special during Carnival, there are also food vendors along every street with a wonderful selection of treats and homemade local favorites. Expect no less than 30 large parades throughout the week, and these boast elaborate costumes, unique and lively floats, performing dancers and a city full of orange balloons. There is at least one large display of fireworks, and street performers and musicians keep the fun going at every turn. The first day of this event is always held on Fat Tuesday, and you can see it officially kicked off when the King of the Carnival gets things going with an elaborate celebration.

Sonar Festival

If you’re a great lover of electronic music, then you’ll definitely want to visit Barcelona in June for this incredible festival that has been running strong since 1994. For three days and nights, the city is alive with music, and Sonar is considered one of the world’s biggest celebrations of this popular art form. Both well-known and promising new talent perform during the festival, and past performers include the Black Madonna, Cashmere Cat and Nadia Rose. There are several fun activities that run while the music plays, and these include a mini film festival and a special tent set up for the enjoyment of the children in attendance.

Primavera Sound

Typically held from the end of May through the beginning of June, this huge music festival has been attracting crowds from around the world since 2001. Those who appreciate any type of music will enjoy this festival because it brings out strong performers from every genre, and you’ll hear pop, jazz, rock, metal, hip-hop, experimental and electronic music. Expect some 200 performances that are extravagantly delivered from eight centralized stages and several other stages throughout the city, and you’ll hear songs in languages that include English, Catalan, Spanish and Portuguese. The talent ranges from today’s top artists to the best newcomers, and past performers include Nine Inch Nails, Joy Orbison, Alien Tango and the Zombies. Clubs around the city often host many of these performers in the evenings, and you’re welcome to dance the night away to the sounds of your favorite singer.

The Candy Festival

Families who are traveling with children and anyone else who has a serious sweet tooth will want to visit Barcelona in March for this sweet festival. There are literally 60 tons of sweets given away during this event. It all takes place during a lively evening parade of epic proportions in the Gracia district, and the candy is handed out to everyone along the parade trail. This festival has interesting beginnings going back to 1830 when a local baker became gravely ill and celebrated his recovery by walking through the streets playing his drum and handing out his homemade candies. After the parade, everyone is welcome to stay for the huge display of fireworks.

Fiesta de Barceloneta

Just about every district in the city participates in this fun festival each June. It’s really a huge block party in every neighborhood, and visitors are welcome. Festivities include huge parades, several displays of fireworks, intense drummers, dancing devils and elaborate decorations. You’ll see huge sculptures and fascinating paper-mache figures, and everyone goes all out because the most decorated street wins a big prize. You’ll also find musicians, various street performers and plenty of vendors on the streets for this fun event.
