Vallter 2000
Beautifully situated in the eastern portion of the Pyrenees Mountains near Girona, this extraordinary ski resort has been offering fun in the snow for couples and families since the early 1970s. The resort sits at an altitude of nearly 6,500 feet in the stunning valley of the River Ter, and it’s surrounded by soaring mountain peaks that offer the perfect conditions for downhill skiing, sledding, tubing, snowshoeing, ski mountaineering and snowboarding. Ski season is open each year from early December to nearly the end of April.
Visitors enjoy a choice of 12 lifts that go up as high as over 8,000 feet, and the huge capacity of these lifts at 7,200 skiers per hour allow this resort to accommodate a large number of guests without any long waits to get back up to the top. You may expect to enjoy some 20 acres of skiing terrain with 14 runs, 17 alpine ski slopes and nine miles of pistes (ski runs with compacted snow), and there’s something wonderful waiting for those at every skill level. You’ll find runs that are perfect for children or beginners as well as runs for intermediate, advanced and even expert skiers.
When you’re ready for lunch or have finished your day of skiing, you’ll want to enjoy a meal at the Les Marmotes, which is located at the highest point accessible by ski lift. Not only is the food superb, but you are welcome to step outside on the terrace for some views that will take your breath away. You’ll be able to see all the way to Costa Brava’s stunning Bay of Roses and enjoy majestic mountain views all around. This restaurant also offers a full bar, so you’re welcome to stop in for a rest and a drink at any time. Warm cocoa is always available for any children in the group, and there are three other restaurants and bars located throughout the ski resort.
There are special areas of this resort that are set up specifically for children, and you’ll find a beautiful playground as well as a snow park that is outfitted with child-size opportunities for fun in the snow. Other special parts of the resort include tubing slopes, a free-ride area, a snowshoe circuit, sledging slopes and a snow park for adults.
Vall de Nuria
This ski resort is noted for its stunning natural beauty, and it’s perfectly situated in the Pyrenees Mountains above one of the highest points of the gorgeous Ribes Valley. It’s surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks that rise as high as nearly 10,000 feet and boasts many stunning flowing water sources. The Nuria River runs through this resort to complete the most picturesque of surroundings. Vall de Nuria is also known for a unique form of transportation that is called the rack railway, and it takes visitors through eight miles of glorious mountain landscape and up an incline of over 3,000 feet.
Skiing season typically runs from the end of November through the middle of April, and you may expect to enjoy 11 alpine skiing slopes, several runs that meet the needs of every skill level and five miles of pistes. Five lifts are available with a capacity of 4,560 skiers per hour, so there’s never a long wait. The skiing area sits at nearly 6,500 feet at its lowest and at over 7,000 feet at its highest, and it boasts a vertical drop of 967 feet. Special areas include three sledging slopes, two snowshoeing circuits and an incredible leisure park. Ice scuba diving is also offered here for certified divers over the age of 18 only, and you’ll be carefully outfitted for safety and warmth.
