Experience a Relaxing Escape to Tulum

February has arrived, and you might still be feeling exhausted from the busy holiday season and the sub-zero temperatures that many of the American states are dealing with. The cold makes everyone feel tired and uncomfortable, and most of us are still trying to recover from all of that holiday cleaning, cooking and shopping. Now is the perfect time to take a well-deserved vacation in a warm and wonderful spot where you can relax, soak up the sun, have a little fun and come back home feeling refreshed and renewed. The weather is absolutely divine in Mexico’s lovely Tulum throughout February and March, and there are many unique ways to discover the relaxation that both your mind and body need in this lovely town on the Caribbean coastline.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Expedition

Connecting with nature is always a wonderful way to renew your inner resources, and you’ll experience three amazing ecosystems, the mangrove forests, the seagrass beds and the barrier reef, with this incredible 9-hour boat tour offered by Conciencia Tours and Travel. An experienced boat captain will take you safely through the waters as a knowledgeable guide teaches you all of the wonders of this stunningly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This tour begins along the mangrove forests, and bird watchers will be delighted by the many migratory birds that arrive in Tulum during the months of December through April. You should also expect to see the resident crocodiles in their natural habitat from the safety of your seat on the boat. Next, you’ll head out into the Caribbean Sea to the seagrass beds, which attract giant sea turtles and bottlenose dolphins for feeding purposes. This area serves as a dolphin sanctuary, so a great many congregate here where they know they are safe.

The Mayan barrier reef is your next stop, and you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters among the many colorful reef fish and coral formations. Move on to swim in the tranquil natural pools of the Caribbean Sea, and see the pristine untouched beaches of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere. You’ll also enjoy an authentic Caribbean meal at a beachside restaurant and meet the locals from the fishing village. Breakfast and purified water and snacks are available throughout the entire tour.

Coba Archeological Rainforest Tour

This same company offers a spectacular 8-hour tour that takes you into the rainforest and introduces you to the wildlife, the amazing archeology and the Mayan communities that are found within its protective embrace. Please note that you’ll need to be in moderately good shape to enjoy this tour as it does include a pyramid climb and quite a bit of walking. Parts of Coba are accessible by bicycle, and you’ll have the option to ride a bike or be transported by Mayan taxi in specific areas.

You’ll begin your day at Coba, an abandoned Mayan kingdom, with an expert in Mayan archaeology. There will be time to explore it thoroughly before you climb Nohoch Mul, Coba’s main pyramid and one of the Mayan’s tallest pyramids in existence. Once you reach the top, you’ll enjoy the stunning view of the rainforest canopy. Next, you’ll discover the animals of the rainforest, which include many colorful birds including toucans, howler and spider monkeys, crocodiles and many more. That is followed by a refreshing swim in a safe, crystal-clear cenote and an educational hike through the rainforest.

Before the day is over, you’ll have the pleasure of meeting a local farmer, who will prepare the group a delicious traditional Mayan meal made with the organic produce from his own garden. There will be a tropical fruit tasting at the farm as well. Each visitor may also elect to receive a special blessing during a Mayan purification ceremony. Your guide will then take you out on a peaceful canoe trip through the tropical lakes that surround Coba. Breakfast, bottled water and snacks are available throughout the tour.

Discover Sistema Sac Actun

Often described as one of the world’s greatest wonders, Sistema Sac Actun, also known as the White Cave System, is the longest underwater cave system in the entire world. Two of its passages are found right in Tulum, and it’s also known to be home to the ancient remains of both human and animal fossils, which include a mastodon, dating so far back that it may be the oldest evidence of life on the planet.

The best part is that you don’t have to be a professional cave diver to enjoy this incredible find, and there are a dozen or more tour companies offering to take you down for a safe snorkeling adventure. You’ll be outfitted with a life vest and a head lamp along with a properly sized mask, snorkel and fins, and your guide will take you to the clear-water cavern where you’ll enjoy snorkeling beneath huge stalactites. There’s also space to get out of the water and explore the cave a bit further.
