Beautiful Punta Mita, Mexico, attracts people from all over the world who are looking for the most luxurious, tropical vacation destination, and you'll definitely enjoy an amazing abundance of wonderful activities and experiences that are available to you. If time permits, you can make your Punta Mita vacation even better by taking a day trip to the incredible village of Sayulita, which is just a short 30 minutes away.
While you may have never heard of this charming village, Sayulita has actually been extremely popular for its excellent surfing opportunities ever since the 1960s. Thanks to its always-present river-mouth surf break, it remains a great spot for surfing for everyone from beginners to advanced suffers. You'll also find many other fun day-trip activities.
1. Surfboard Rentals
Because of its year-around fabulous surfing, you'll find surfboard rentals at several locations along Sayulita Beach. Right in front of the village is the perfect break for those who like to surf with a long board, and a significantly faster break can be found in front of the campground. There's a wonderful beach area right outside Don Pedros Restaurant, where you can rent boards and snorkeling equipment. The Las Sirenas Beach Club also offers board rentals, beach umbrellas and lounge chairs.
2. Have Lunch in Sayulita
During your day trip, you'll definitely want to try out some of the great restaurants that feature freshly caught seafood and other local ingredients. Don Pedros offers an amazing pizza topped with loads of fresh shrimp, and excellent mole-sauce dishes and shrimp chile rellenos may be had at Cafe Sayulita. You may also like to sample the fresh fish tacos that are featured at Sayulita Fish Tacos, and you'll get delicious fare such as the Thai wrap and the chicken-mango salad at Choco Banana.
3. A Shopper's Paradise
Sayulita is home to around 45 locally-owned shops that feature unique, hand-picked merchandise. Most are located in the downtown area within about four blocks of each other so that you'll have an easy time visiting them all. These include the Gypsy Galleria, Sayulita Sol Jewelry, Evoke the Spirit and La Hamaca. Once you've made it over to Delfin's pedestrian street, you'll find some unique creations that are handmade by local artisans.
4. Take Advantage of a Private Horseback-Riding Experience
At Rancho Manuel, there are beautiful, well-trained horses and a completely private beach at your disposal. You may choose your adventure, which may include a romantic ride for two along the beach and even into the water if you like. Your ride will also take you through a forest and up a mountain. The highlight of your romantic ride is seeing the sun set from the top of the mountain. Fun family rides are also offered, and children as young as age 6 may ride their own pony. For something really different, you should be sure to ask about the tequila tours or the monkey mountain tours.
5. Have a Quiet Day at Playa los Muertos
This is Sayulita's calm-water beach that isn't meant for surfing, but it's a great spot to snorkel in the clear, calm waters and allow the children to play. You'll also find this beach less crowded than others and a great spot for a picnic.
